High Efficiency Step-Down Converters with One-Pin EasyScale(TM) Interface Enable Dynamic Voltage Scaling in Portable Electronics
DALLAS, June 9 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced today two dual-output, step-down DC/DC converters with a patented one-pin serial interface technology that allows simple digital voltage scaling. The 95-percent efficient, 2.25-Mhz devices help extend battery life in cell phones, portable media players and other portable electronics, as well as portable industrial and medical equipment. See: http://www.ti.com/sc06110 . TI's new TPS62400 synchronous, dual-channel switcher with integrated FET technology supports up to 400mA of output current on the first output and up to 600 mA on the second output over an input voltage range of 2.5 V to 6 V. The converter features TI's one-pin EasyScale(TM) serial interface, which allows the device to adjust the output voltage dynamically during operation. The patented feature allows the TPS62400 to support dynamic voltage scaling when powering TI's TMS320C5000(TM) digital signal processors (DSPs) and OMAP(TM) processors used in smart phones, PDAs and other portable equipment. In addition to the TPS62400, TI introduced the TPS62420 dual step-down converter, optimized for portable industrial and medical equipment that deliver up to 600 mA on the first output and up to 1,000 mA on second output. Both devices operate in a power-save mode at light-load currents and can be placed in a shutdown mode that reduces the power consumption to less than 1.2 ¦ÌA. Single-Chip Power Solution The TPS62400 and TPS62420 save valuable board space, while providing extremely efficient power conversion without the need for external compensation. To save board space, each device comes in a small, 10-pin 3 mm x 3 mm QFN package, and a 2.25-MHz fixed frequency allows a portable designer to implement small inductors and capacitors. Key Features of the TPS62400/420: * 95 Percent Efficiency at 2.25-MHz Operation * Input Voltage Range from 2.5 V to 6 V * Dual-Output Current 400 mA and 600 mA * Adjustable Output Voltage from 0.6 V to Vin * One-Pin EasyScale(TM) Serial Interface for Dynamic Output Voltage Adjustment * 32-¦ÌA Typical Quiescent Current * Power Save Mode at Light Load Currents * 180¡ã Out-of-Phase Operation * One Percent Output Voltage Accuracy in PWM Mode Available Today The TPS62400 and TPS62420 is currently shipping in volume production. Suggested retail pricing is $2.70 in 1,000-piece quantities.
