November RPI Indicator Shows Highest Monthly Rise in Two
Years

    Highlights

    In November 2006, the Renminbi Pressure Indicator (RPI)
rose by 1.16 percent from the previous month, from 190.0 to
192.2.  This was the highest monthly percentage change in
nearly two years.  Also in November, China's foreign
exchange reserves rose to US$1.04 trillion.

    Analysis 
    The gain in the index was attributable to appreciation
of the yuan and an increase in foreign exchange reserves,
which increased nearly US$30 billion from the previous
month.  The rate of yuan appreciation against the U.S.
dollar grew to 0.59 percent, from 0.37 percent in November,
while growth in China's foreign exchange reserves
accelerated to 2.89 percent, from 2.19 percent.  Of the
1.16 percent growth in the Renminbi Pressure Indicator,
yuan appreciation accounted for a 0.20 percentage point
increase, and growth in reserves contributed the remaining
0.96 percentage point increase.  There was no change in
domestic interest rates.        
    Outlook: In December, the rate of yuan growth against
the dollar slowed to 0.31 percent, which could also slow
the growth rate of RPI.

    Methodology 
    The RPI is based on a monthly examination of the
interaction between the following variables to compute
overall cumulative exchange rate pressure: the percentage
change in the spot exchange rate, the percentage change in
foreign exchange reserves, and the change in domestic
interest rates. 

    The indicator measures the pressure on China's currency
relative to the U.S. dollar.  It is set equal to 100 on
January 1, 2000. Increases in the RPI reflect appreciation
pressure on the renminbi (RMB).  The indicator covers the
period from November 30, 1980, through November 2006.  Data
are available from the Milken Institute upon request.  There
will be a two- to four-month delay in reporting values for
the indicator, depending on the release of information from
authorities in China.

obtained from the International Monetary Fund, People's
Bank of China and State Administration of Foreign
Exchange.

    Highlights

    The IPO indicator dropped 2.66 percent in January 2007,
from 237.8 to 231.5.  Chinese IPOs this month raised a total
of $789 million.  Of the ten newly listed companies, nine
are small and medium enterprises listed on Shenzhen Stock
Exchange and one is listed on Shanghai Stock Exchange. 

    Analysis 

    For the first time since July 2006, the IPO indicator
dropped -- by 2.66 percent in January 2007.  Of the eighty
companies included in both this month's and last month's
indicator, six saw a decline in price, while seventy-four
saw an increase.  The Industrial and Commercial Bank of
China (ICBC) alone contributed 71 percent of the decrease
in the indicator's float-adjusted market capitalization,
while the Bank of China (BOC) contributed another 28
percent.  The A share price of ICBC dropped 20 percent in
the past month, and its H share price dropped approximately
6 percent, which is not uncommon after the initial sharp
run-up in price.  One company was deleted from the
indicator after staying for twelve months, and ten newly
listed companies were added.  The ten January IPOs were all
on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges. 

    Methodology

    A stock's float-adjusted market capitalization over
time forms the basis for indicator calculations.  Stock
dividends, stock splits, special dividends, share
consolidations, repurchases, spin-offs, and combination
stock distributions may trigger adjustments to the
indicator values.  Only companies incorporated and
domiciled in mainland China that go public on the Shanghai,
Shenzhen, and Hong Kong stock exchanges are included. 

    Time Period Coverage and Frequency

    New companies are added to the indicator as soon as
they are listed, while current companies are removed after
twelve months.  The IPO Indicator has a base date of
December 31, 1997, when the indicator's value was set equal
to 100, and covers the period from December 31, 1991, to the
present.  Values are calculated on a monthly basis.  The
indicator for each month is released in the third week of
the following month.

    The real-time and historical trading data used in the
construction of this indicator are provided by Bloomberg
and Xinhua Finance; underlying information used to
calculate the float ratio is obtained from a variety of

Ford Motor (China) Ltd. Chairman and CEO Mei-Wei Cheng Speaks on Leadership

    SHANGHAI, China, Feb. 26 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- The
Rutgers Executive MBA office in Shanghai hosted on February
8, 2007 a talk on its on-going EMBA Leadership Series, with
speech delivered by Mei-Wei Cheng, Chairman and CEO of Ford
Motor (China) Ltd. 

    Speaking to an audience of Rutgers alumni, students and
special guests, Mei-Wei Cheng, himself a Rutgers Beijing
EMBA alumni from the class of 1999, shared his leadership
experiences with three of the world's largest and most
recognized organizations; AT&T, General Electric and
the Ford Motor Company.  When asked to define leadership
Cheng stated that it is "someone's ability to improve
and motivate people/organization, to make achievements
worthwhile by helping people/organization, to become more
than they realized they can be.  Managers need to get the
results through people whereas Senior Executives need to
motivate a lot of people".

    Cheng talked about the need for strong communication
skills.  "You could be the smartest guy in the world,
but if you can't convey your ideas, then you probably will
not be seen as such".

    It was during his tenure at General Electric that Cheng
was introduced to the 4-E's; Energy, Energize, Edge (a
willingness to make tough decisions) and Execute (being
results driven) which he still refers to today.  Moving to
Ford, Cheng discovered a corporate culture that can be best
be described as a balance between innovation and the
continual pursuit to develop leading-edge processes,
technologies and products and being socially responsible. 


    In terms of Chinese State Owned Enterprises (SOE),
Cheng remarked that they need to anticipate changes in
technologies, market dynamics and global competition. 
SOE's must also learn to change quickly and decisively,
find and support "change agents" on the
leadership team and above all constantly communicate a
consistent message.

    In his view, the qualities for being a successful
leader include self-confidence and commitment, courage,
integrity, humility and initiative, tenacity and
perseverance, a passion for winning and delivering on
commitments, and the notion change or die.  "Change is

Discovery Channel's The Lost Tomb of Jesus Reveals New Scientific Evidence Supporting Possible Find of Jesus Family Tomb

Scientific analysis of limestone ossuaries (bone boxes) and
physical evidence found in a 2,000-year-old tomb in Talpiot,
Jerusalem, provide credible new information that the tomb
once may have held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his
family.  A new Discovery Channel documentary THE LOST TOMB
OF JESUS, from executive producer James Cameron and
director Simcha Jacobovici, exclusively reveals what might
be the greatest archaeological find in history.  The film
presents the latest evidence from world-renowned experts in
Aramaic script, ancient DNA analysis, forensics, archaeology
and statistics.  Among the major discoveries chronicled in
the program is new evidence that Jesus and Mary Magdalene,
also known as "Mariamene e Mara," may have had a
son named Judah.

discovered more than 25 years ago but never were connected
conclusively.  In conjunction with the film,

Jesus Family Tomb, co-authored by Jacobovici and Dr.
Charles Pellegrino, with a foreword by Cameron.

    The Talpiot tomb originally held 10 ossuaries, nine of
which are still within the Israel Antiquity Authority's
domain.  Six of the limestone bone boxes that served as
First Century Jerusalem-area coffins include inscriptions
of names found in the New Testament - "Jesus son of
Joseph," "Maria," "Mariamene e
Mara," "Matthew," "Yose" and
"Judah son of Jesus."

    Could this have been a holy tomb for Jesus and his
family?  Evidence shows the following: 

     - Leading epigraphers agree about the text
inscriptions; 

     - Expert archaeologists confirm the nature of the
finds and their

     - The tomb contains a mysterious symbol over the
entrance found on 
       other Christian artifacts; and 
     - A statistical study concludes that the odds - on the
most 
       conservative basis - are 600 to 1 in favor of this
being the 
       Jesus family tomb.

    Dr. Carney Matheson from the Paleo-DNA Laboratory at
Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada, conducted a
mitochondrial DNA analysis on microscopic bits of matter
recovered from the "Jesus son of Joseph" and
"Mariamene e Mara" ossuaries.  The test
genetically concludes that the two were not maternally
related.  Given that this was a family burial place
reserved for spouses and blood relations, it is possible to
deduce that they were a couple.  

    As shown in the film, Jacobovici and his team use
robotic cameras to locate the tomb, which was believed to
have been destroyed but is actually in the center of a
modern-day apartment complex.  After briefly entering the
tomb, the filmmakers follow local regulations and seal the
tomb with the hopes that they will return to conduct
further analysis.

will provide in-depth information to allow viewers to make
their own decisions about these extraordinary findings.  A
virtual evidence kit, with the latest scientific analysis,
can be examined first hand.   The original map of the tomb

announced that over 170,000 Hughes-manufactured terminals
employing the DVB-S2/ACM feature have been shipped
worldwide. This validates Hughes as the leading supplier of
VSATs (very small aperture terminals) that are compliant
with the DVB-S2 industry standard, introduced by Hughes in
mid-2006, and which yield higher throughputs and more
efficient bandwidth utilization.

    "In Africa, satellite capacity is a critical
resource to our operation and the use of DVB-S2 with ACM
has allowed AFSAT to gain valuable additional capacity over
DVB-S," said Salim Suleman, CEO of AFSAT. "The

国際ローミング対応エリアを拡大

~対応エリアが1つ増え、合計166の国と地域で通話が可能に~


 ボーダフォン株式会社(本社:東京都港区、社長:孫 正義)は、ボーダフォンの第3世代(3G)携帯電話※1が海外でそのまま使える国際ローミングサービスの対応エリアを2006年9月25日(月)より拡大し、166の国と地域で通話できるようになります。今回新たに対応エリアになるのは、トリニダード・トバゴです。また、インターネット接続サービスの対応エリアに新たにアラブ首長国連邦を追加し、合計92の国と地域でご利用いただけるようになります。

 また、ボーダフォンでは、すでに対応エリアとなっている国や地域においても、これまで以上に便利にご利用いただけるよう、提携する通信事業者数を順次増やしています。今回の拡大により、国際ローミングサービス対応エリアの166の国と地域のうち、67の国と地域で複数の事業者と提携し、合計240事業者のネットワークが利用可能となります。

 ボーダフォンでは、2002年12月に国際ローミングサービスを開始して以来、海外でそのまま利用できる3G携帯電話のラインアップを充実させてきました。現在、ボーダフォンの最新カタログ(2006年9月号)に掲載している国際ローミングサービスの対応機種数は13機種※2です。今後もさらに国際ローミング対応エリアの拡充に取り組み、より豊かなグローバルコミュニケーションを実現してまいります。

日本ブランド戦略研究所、、「企業Webサイトの金額価値」に関する調査結果を発表

「トヨタのWebサイト価値は1,528億円」
2位は全日空、3位はホンダ


<結果概要>
 日本ブランド戦略研究所(本社:東京都港区、代表者:榛沢明浩)は、一般消費者向けの事業を行う日本の有力企業の198社のWebサイトの金額価値を測定し、その結果を公表した。
 1位は4年連続トヨタ自動車で、1,528億円だった。2位は全日空で831億円、以下、ホンダが741億円、松下(電器産業・電工)が700億円、日本航空が614億円という結果となった。

 貢献度は商品の販売への貢献度と、企業や商品の認知度、好感度などのブランド向上への貢献度の2つの側面から評価した。
 評価にあたっては、アンケート調査結果および財務データを使用した。
 アンケート調査は2006年6月に全国の一般消費者を対象に実施し、有効回答数は6,767であった。

 アメリカの西海岸ではポピュラーな「コブサラダ」は、ハリウッドのレストランオーナー、ボブ・コブ氏が常連客のために身近な材料で作った具だくさんサラダのことで、レタスの上に、チキン、アボカド、ゆで卵、たまねぎなど様々な具材をダイスカットして並べたのが特徴です。キユーピーグループでは、2006年春からこの「コブサラダ」を日本の新しいサラダとして、外食を中心に提案しています。また業務用ドレッシングとして、具だくさんのコブサラダに合うメキシカンタイプのスパイシーな「コブサラダドレッシング」を発売しています。

 株式会社免疫生物研究所(群馬県高崎市)は、多種多様な単一遺伝子ノックアウトマウスを日本の市場で容易に入手できるようにするため、タコニック社(英名:Taconic Farms, Inc.、本社:米国ニューヨーク州)と契約を締結しましたので、お知らせします。

 免疫生物研究所はタコニック社からトラディショナルモデル、エマージングモデルの他、タコニック社独自に作製したタコニックトランスジェニックモデル(TTM(TM))を日本国内のユーザーに販売しておりますが、今回の新たな契約は、両社の長年に渡る関係の更なる伸展に繋がるものと思われます。免疫生物研究所は、タコニック社とレキシコン社(英名:Lexicon Genetics Incorporated)との提携によって取り扱い可能になった、単一遺伝子ノックアウトマウス全種類を、国内のユーザーに販売してまいります。

 レキシコン社との提携によってタコニック社は、特注モデルの場合を除き1,150種以上のノックアウトマウスを迅速に顧客に提供できるようになりました。そして、今回の免疫生物研究所とタコニック社の新たな契約により、レキシコン社の多様なモデルの日本顧客向け販売が可能となりました。

 JTBでは、7月から、JTBホームページ(http://www.jtb.co.jp/myjtb/pr/)において、旅行やライフスタイルに関するトレンドを把握し、新しいライフスタイルを積極的に提案・発信するため、インターネットによるアンケート「JTB 旅のアンケート たびQ (たびきゅう)」を行っている。

 第3回目は、「おじいちゃんおばあちゃんと行きたい旅行は?」と題して、敬老の日(9月18日)にちなんだアンケートを実施した。65歳以上の老年人口比率が20%を超えるなど、ますます高齢化が進む一方、「アクティブシニア」と呼ばれる仕事や趣味に意欲的な高齢者が出現し、高齢者の旅行に対する意欲がより積極的になっている。調査結果は以下のとおり。

 日本コムシスのサイトサーベイでは、無線LANネットワークを構築する前に、擬似アンテナを立てて試験的にオフィス内のネットワーク環境を測定します。そのため、社内レイアウトを変更したり、新たな什器を設置する場合などにも、事前にその変化に合わせた電波環境を測定することができます。また測定結果は、フロアレイアウトにあわせて無線LANに影響を与える電波の強弱を色分けしてわかりやすいレポートとして提供し、電波という目に見えないものを可視化することで、顧客にとってよりわかりやすくなるように工夫しています。

NICTなど、日米間のGMPLSによる10ギガビットイーサネット回線の設定に成功

日米間のGMPLSによる10Gbps超高速回線のダイナミックな経路制御に初めて成功!
-光経路制御プロトコルGMPLS(※)の国際相互接続実験-

 独立行政法人情報通信研究機構(以下NICT。理事長:長尾 真)と株式会社KDDI研究所(以下KDDI研。所長:秋葉重幸)は、米国MCNC(President and Chief Executive Officer:John C.Crites)らと共同で、異なるGMPLS(注1)環境下にある日米間ネットワークにおいて、現在規格化が進められているE-NNI(Exterior Network-to-Network Interface)(注2)を用いた国際接続実証実験を行い、GMPLSによる10ギガビットイーサネット回線の設定に世界で初めて成功しました。この成功は、今後のGMPLS国際標準化活動に大きく貢献するものと期待できます。


【 実証実験の概要と意義 】
 本実証実験は、NICTが運用・管理する研究開発テストベッドネットワークJGN2(注3)の日米回線を用いて、日本国内GMPLSネットワークJGN2と北米のMCNC(注4)が中心となって運用するEnlightened Computing(注5)研究開発ネットワークとをKDDI研が開発したGMPLSのE-NNIで接続し、日米の局舎間で10ギガビットイーサネットの経路制御が行われ、光回線の設定が可能なことを確認できました。

 これまで、国際間の回線設定は、2.5ギガビットまでが主流でしたが、大容量画像データを扱うアプリケーションの増加等により、トラフィック量が増大し、汎用的な通信規格であるイーサネットを用いた超高速回線10ギガビットイーサネットの回線設定と、さらにその設定を瞬時のうちに行なうことの要求が高まっています。また、異なるネットワーク間の回線設定については、各々のネットワーク内の設定及びネットワーク間の相互接続設定は、そのほとんどが人的な調整に負うところが多く、数週間から、数ヶ月の日数を要していました。しかし、本E-NNIを用いることにより、ネットワーク内のユーザーだけでなく、複数のネットワークをまたがるユーザーに対しても、大容量回線の設定を迅速に行うことが可能となり、サービスを受けるユーザーが利用するまでの時間が大幅に短縮されます。


【 今後の活動 】
 今後は、さらに拡大した多くの国を結ぶ研究開発ネットワークを相互接続し、世界規模の実証実験を促進し、次世代のインターネットの基盤となる超高速光ネットワーク技術の研究開発に対して大きく貢献して行きます。
