PARIS, June 7 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), today announced that the low-priced fashion chain Kiabi Europe have deployed Symbol's enterprise mobility solutions in its stores and warehouses to help improve their logistical operations. Kiabi Europe is a leading French clothing retailer, operating 140 stores in France, as well as 15 stores in Spain, 1 store in Portugal and 4 stores in Italy. Kiabi have implemented Symbol's end-to-end wireless solution to assist with optimising work for its users and improve productivity. The newly deployed mobile computers run on Symbol's wireless network infrastructure and are managed by Symbol's Mobility Services Platform (MSP), enabling Kiabi to easily manage the new infrastructure and the mobile devices that are attached to it. To improve logistical operations in its warehouses, Kiabi equipped one of its warehouses, (covering 15 000 meters squared), with Symbol's PDT6100 and PDT6800 terminals. Following the successful completion of the pilot, a second warehouse, (covering 30 000 meters squared), was fully equipped with over 200 MC3000 and MC9000 mobile computers in early 2006. The mobile computers are used for preparing orders, validating picked items and for deliveries. Both warehouses saved a considerable amount of time using Symbol mobile computers that connected wirelessly to the Symbol wireless network infrastructure, which included AP4131 access points. With its transparent data transfer functionality, the network allowed for real-time tracking of Kiabi's operations. "We are delighted with the excellent commercial relationship we have established with Symbol, who have accompanied us throughout the process of overhauling our system and deploying our new solution." said Eric Couvelaere, Kiabi's IS Technical Architecture Manager. "In addition to the easy implementation and use of Symbol's mobile solution, we have observed a very swift return on investment. Moreover, we appreciate the robustness and reliability of the Symbol devices." Encouraged both by the rapid adoption of Symbol's mobile computers and the success of the wireless infrastructure in its warehouses, Kiabi sought to extend the process to its stores. A pilot was set up in one of its sales outlets using Symbol's PPT8800 portable terminals running a business application developed in-house, and connected via Symbol's wireless radio network and AP4131 access points. The solution enabled store personnel to directly consult stocks, check prices, monitor incoming and outgoing goods, and prepare markdowns. Store staff were won over by the solution, with considerable gains in terms of both productivity and efficiency being made. To remotely manage, deploy and administer the mobile computers deployed across the various sites, Kiabi installed Symbol's MSP platform to monitor devices, perform upgrades, and check batteries, thus reducing costs and time. MSP represents a modular platform with a single control point for easy management of the entire mobile solution. "Symbol is the world leader in mobile solutions, boasting unparalleled experience and expertise in the design of mobile technologies," said Nicolas Segons, general manager, Symbol France. "We have worked hand-in-hand with Kiabi to integrate a high-performance mobile solution." A third warehouse has also been equipped with a further 200 mobile computers during May 2006. Obesity is also a risk factor. * Maternal vitamin D levels during pregnancy and infant bone growth influence future fracture risk. * The rate of osteoporosis in men is climbing, with estrogen level an important component. * Calcium supplements are only effective in the presence of additional vitamin D at doses of 800 international units or above. * There is a major gap in treating patients with osteoporosis, despite the availability of a wide range of drugs, supplements and practices that help maintain and even build bone strength. This problem is due to under-diagnosis, and failure of governments to reimburse people at risk. * The rate of osteoporosis in Latin America is growing and higher than previously estimated. * Research confirms the importance of calcium, vitamin D and protein in building bones. * Exercise in childhood and adolescence may stave off osteoporosis. * Cigarette smoke, both primary and secondary, can weaken your bones and increase the risk of fractures. http://www.osteofound.org/wco/2006/media_centre/20060606_closing/20060606_closing.doc (Please copy and paste the above URL in browser.) SHANGHAI, June 7 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Westin Hotels & Resorts announced on June 1 they will become the first hotel chain in this region to introduce a smoke-free policy. Beginning July 31st, The Westin Sydney, The Westin Melbourne and The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa Fiji will be totally smoke free and join Westin's 77 North America hotels that introduced a smoke-free policy this past January. This new policy also reinforces Westin's new brand positioning around personal renewal and offering guests the services, products and amenities that allow them to relax, rejuvenate and restore during their stay. The hotels have not only made a 12 month jump start on non-smoking legislation that will be introduced to Australia in July 2007, they will also be exceeding the requirements by abolishing "smoking rooms". The three properties will be smoke free in public areas as well as 100% smoke free in all guest rooms -- with the traditional "smoking rooms" to become a thing of the past. Outdoor smoking areas will be designated for guests who smoke. Westin's new industry leading smoke-free policy is a result of customer data and a clear demand from guests for a healthy, totally smoke free hotel experience. It's also a natural evolution for the Westin brand who've developed a reputation as an industry innovator thanks to the renowned Heavenly Bed? and Service Express(TM) concepts -- also industry firsts. "At the heart of all our decisions is the comfort, well-being and quality of life for our guests," comments Sue Brush, Senior Vice President for Westin Hotels & Resorts. "We view our hotels as a retreat from the rigors of travel and we are proud to have The Westin Sydney, The Westin Melbourne and The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa Fiji join our North American properties and become smoke-free," she adds. "Industry research as well as our own research confirmed a demand for a clean, smoke free hotel environment and we felt it important to take this step," adds Sean Hunt, VP & Area Managing Director for Starwood Australia Pacific Hotels. "The new smoke free policy supports our goal to offer a spectrum of products, services and personal touches that help our guests leave our hotels feeling better than when they arrived," he adds. Westin consumer data revealed 95% of its guests in this region request a non-smoking room when traveling and don't smoke in any area of the hotel, including public areas. In eight test hotels that introduced 100% smoke free policies in the US, all enjoyed overwhelming positive response from guests. Introduction of the smoke free policy six months ago across all 77 Westin properties in North America has also received positive feedback from guests, staff and industry. In addition, recent independent consumer surveys highlight 71% of people polled support a total ban on smoking in hotels, pubs and clubs while 81% of consumers dislike it if they stay in a non-smoking room and it smells like smoke*. "We're confident our guests and clients will embrace this bold move to be smoke free throughout our hotels in Australia and the Pacific," added Sean Hunt. One of Westin's largest clients in this region, research-based medicines company, Pfizer Australia has commended the introduction of the new policy. "We welcome the move by Westin to provide a smoke free environment for our staff away from our own work place," comments Pfizer's Suzanne Blake, Product Manager for Nicorette. Australia's peak tobacco control group, Quit has also commended the decision to go smoke free beyond planned July 2007 legislation: "We applaud the Westin hotels for taking this very positive step on behalf of their guests," said Executive Director of Quit, Mr Todd Harper. "We're hopeful that the Westin's leadership in this area will encourage other hotel chains to make the same moves forward in ensuring all their guests and staff are protected from secondhand smoke" he added. The three hotels in this region are finalizing preparations to go smoke free by the self imposed target date of 31 July including involving hotel staff in a "Wellness Week" where free advice and support on quitting smoking will be made available to all associates. With a monthly circulation of over 36,018, ESMC is one of Mainland China's most influential magazines for the electronics industry. "It is an honor for Arrow China to be named one of the Most Preferred International Distributors for the fifth consecutive year," said Peter Kong, President of Arrow Asia Pac Ltd. "Being recognized as a top distributor clearly demonstrates that we are making significant progress in our journey to be the Clear #1 in the industry. We pledge to continue investing in customer-facing support, product offerings, technical services, supply chain services, and operational efficiency in China and strive to be the distributor of choice to our customers, suppliers and business partners." In a series of surveys conducted by ESM earlier this year, feedback was collected from 810 purchasing professionals serving with leading Mainland electronic companies in a range of industries including consumer electronics, communications, and various industrial segments. Over 43% of those interviewed are purchasing managers or at executive management level. Some 61% of these companies are OEM and Contract Manufacturers in China. In 2005, they purchased more than US$30.4 billion (RMB$252.2 billion) worth of electronic components over 59% of which was bought through distributors. "The growth potential of the China market is tremendous. While the competition is intense and product life cycles are shrinking dramatically, with our global resources, innovative supply chain services, and extensive sales and technical support coverage, Arrow China is well positioned to help customers improve just-in-time manufacturing and time-to-market capabilities," added Simon Yu, Senior Vice President, Senior Vice President of Sales of Arrow Greater China & Korea. This is the sixth consecutive year that ESMC has conducted this survey. The research's objectives were to examine the current state of the mainland electronic component distribution market and provide an overview of customer preferences in selecting a distributor. The survey invited readers to evaluate distributors in a number of areas: technical and design support, logistics, company creditability, inventory availability, product price, product quality, financial stability, responsiveness and e-commerce readiness and capabilities. ESMC will announce results for all these areas in August. The survey, which targeted purchasing departments heads or senior managers from some of the leading telecommunications, consumer electronics, PC, industrial, medical equipment and automotive companies in China, offers a significant representation of the overall market profile. CAMBRIDGE, England, June 7 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- New semiconductor designer Adventiq has announced details of its first product, a system-on-a-chip designed for remote KVM (keyboard, video and mouse) control of PCs and servers. Every sizable company needs to be able to remotely manage its computers and servers. Support resources are often placed where they can be provided most cost effectively, and effective support means being able to access a computer or server during start-up, shutdown or lock-up states as well as during normal operation. Remote KVM control is therefore an essential complement to facilities such as remote log-in that depend upon the target computer being functional. To date, companies seeking a KVM solution have had to choose between low-cost analog switches -- which extend access only a few hundred meters -- and high-cost digital KVM-over-IP solutions which offer access from anywhere in the world over standard IP networks. Chief Executive Peter Wharton explains, "The $800m global KVM marketplace is shifting from analog switching to digital KVM-over-IP. The flexibility of KVM-over-IP means it has taken a significant slice of the market despite costing ten times more than traditional analog switches. By eliminating the size and cost disadvantages of current digital solutions, our system-on-a-chip will greatly accelerate this transition." The new product, ARQ3, is a low cost, high performance ASIC that provides higher performance, stability, and integration than currently available solutions. Aimed principally at manufacturers of KVM switches, ARQ3 is also suitable for a broad range of embedded and industrial applications. ARQ3 was developed in close collaboration with RealVNC, the originators of the VNC product family. VNC software has become the industry standard for cross-platform remote access, trusted by tens of millions of users worldwide. ARQ3 embeds a RealVNC Enterprise Edition Server, capable of supporting remote sessions from the original open-source VNC viewer, the free-to-download RealVNC version, or a standard web browser. Many users will therefore already be familiar with the user interface. Adventiq's silicon solution uses highly efficient adaptive compression algorithms and patented video processing techniques to give a significantly improved user experience over a wide range of network bandwidths. Highly robust enterprise grade security is a standard feature, as is support for remote USB media. Despite uncertainty surrounding the availability of 20-year-old striker Wayne Rooney, Sven-Goran Eriksson's England side is listed with the second best odds to end their 40-year drought on the big stage at 8/1. PinnacleSports.com also lists Germany at 8/1 to become the sixth country to win the month-long tournament on its home soil, while Argentina (8/1) and Italy (19/2) are solid contenders to capture their third and fourth World Cups, respectively. LISLE, Ill., June 6 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Quellan Incorporated, a leading provider of analog signal integrity chips for the rapidly growing data center, consumer, automotive and cell phone markets, and Molex(R) Incorporated (Nasdaq: MOLX, MOLXA), a global manufacturer of interconnect systems, today ran the proposed PCI Express Cable Standard to 30 meters -- a breakthrough for Data Center economics. At Globalcomm, both Quellan and Molex demonstrated the ability to extend data center reach at 2.5 Gbps to over four times the length of the currently proposed PCI Express Standard of seven meters. By combining Quellan's low power X-TEN Cable Extension Module with Molex's iPass(TM) interconnect system, signal reach extension is made possible by compensating for channel noise, attenuation and impairments, all of which greatly affect signal quality after seven meters of transmission. Ideal for high density clusters and remote I/O applications, reach extension of PCI Express allows Data Center equipment to be interconnected at ultra high speeds using a low cost PC standard. "Molex has established itself as a major player in PC interconnect technology, in particular given our recent success of using the iPass Interconnect System within the PCI Express Standard," said Gourgen Oganessyan, Senior Signal Integrity Engineer, Molex Incorporated. "Partnering with a cutting-edge silicon technology player such as Quellan has allowed us to extend the reach of our cable assemblies, while ensuring reliable data transmission at PCI speeds (up to five Gbps), and all the way to next generation SAS speeds (up to 6 Gbps). By doing this we have demonstrated a feasible and cost effective technology that will cover over 90 percent of the Data Center application space." "PCI Express is a major PC Interconnect Standard today. Bringing this pervasive PC interconnect to the Data Center will provide huge economic benefits, now that it can go the distance," said Tony Stelliga, President and CEO of Quellan. "The Quellan Lane Manager chips used in our X-TEN Module coupled with Molex's iPass interconnect system enable this transition to PC economics in the Data Center."
